Willow Garage PR2 (Personal Robot 2)

PR2Advanced

Willow Garage's 2010 dual-arm mobile-manipulation research robot, the platform where ROS was born.

PR2 is a mobile-manipulation robot developed by the American robotics research organization Willow Garage, going on sale in August 2010. It has an omnidirectional mobile base, a telescoping torso, two 7-degree-of-freedom arms (about 1.8 kg payload each), a head-mounted camera and lidar, and two 8-core servers built into its base. In 2010, Willow Garage lent PR2 units to 11 research teams for two years, and the open-source software that came with it was ROS (Robot Operating System), which is how ROS became widespread in academia. It reportedly sold for about $400,000. Willow Garage closed in early 2014, and ongoing support for PR2 passed to Clearpath Robotics.

ExampleA Berkeley team once used a PR2 to demonstrate picking towels out of a pile and folding them.
